What is historic child sexual abuse?

While “historic abuse” is a commonly used term, it is more accurately known as “non-recent abuse”.

That recognises that there is nothing historic about the suffering inflicted on survivors. It is defined as abuse an adult suffered when they were a child.

The effects of abuse can last for many years, and include:

  • Poor mental health.
  • Guilt or shame.
  • Poor self-esteem.
  • Issues with relationships.
  • Eating disorders.
  • Depression.
  • Issues with alcohol or drugs.

These issues won’t go away simply because you win compensation, but making a historic child abuse claim can be a first step towards putting the past behind you and getting your life under control.

Making a historic child abuse claim

There is no time limit on historic child abuse claims.

Even if the perpetrator is deceased, you may be able to make a claim against their estate or the organisation that employed them.

This is because many perpetrators of historic child sexual abuse were in positions of power, in organisations that may have failed in their duty of care.

Some of the most common settings for abuse were:

  • Churches and other religious buildings.
  • Sports clubs.
  • Schools.
  • Children’s homes.

Survivors of abuse may feel understandably anxious about facing their abuser in court. However, the vast majority of cases are settled without court action.

If the claim does go to court, our historic child abuse team will be able to help you get the support you need.
